The vessel schedule is not the operation schedule

Between the order and goods ready for sale sit supplier pickup, the shipping window, ocean transit, discharge, clearance and delivery. Ocean freight is measured in weeks, and the total depends on route, transshipment and season. Comparing quotes on vessel days alone ignores the stages that most often cause delay.

Groupage or a dedicated container

Less than container load lets you buy a smaller volume but charges a minimum space and adds consolidation and deconsolidation steps, which cost time. A full container is usually more efficient once quantity justifies it and reduces handling. The choice follows volume and urgency, not preference.

What raises the price beyond the freight rate

Season surcharges, bunker adjustments, port congestion, daily warehousing and charges for a container returned after the free period. Handling, the ocean freight additional and destination delivery also weigh. A low headline rate with hidden local charges often ends up more expensive.

What delays an ocean shipment

Documents inconsistent with the goods, a licence or approval not obtained before shipment, risk parametrization that requires inspection, a missed shipping window, an unconnected transshipment, and strikes or port congestion. Much of the delay is documentary and avoidable before departure.

How to actually compare two quotes

Match origin, destination, Incoterm, container type, service level and what local charges are included. Then add the cost of holding the stock: tied-up capital, stockout risk and warehousing. The cheapest freight is the one that arrives while the goods are still worth something.
